The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a spectacle of speed, precision, and global glamour—but behind the roar of engines and the glitter of celebrity sightings lies a force equally vital to the race’s success: its volunteers. Scattered across the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, these young Emiratis and expats form the quiet backbone of the UAE’s premier sporting event, ensuring that every visitor enjoys a seamless, memorable Formula One experience.
Since the inaugural race in 2009—when 350 British volunteers were brought in to help launch the event—the Abu Dhabi GP has evolved into a powerful platform for local engagement. Today, more than 450 volunteers, organised through Emirates Foundation, represent the spirit of community service and national pride that defines the UAE.
“Volunteers register on Volunteers.ae, shortlist themselves for the Formula One opportunity, and attend orientation,” explains Mohammed Al Abbasi, Senior Projects Lead – Regional at Emirates Foundation. A dedicated volunteer himself since 2009, Al Abbasi says the two-day training includes team-building, communication workshops, and role-specific preparation.
Volunteers take on critical responsibilities across the venue—from ushers in the grandstands to drivers of club cars, from multilingual guides to specially trained assistants for people of determination. Others serve as courtesy car staff, sign language support, or protocol volunteers for VVIP guests. “Over the years, the team has become like a family,” Al Abbasi shares with pride.
For many volunteers, the experience is transformative. Salama Al Hamadi, a 27-year-old Emirati mechanical engineer, began as a track marshal in 2021. “It forces you to be part of a team because you cannot remove a car part alone,” she says, reflecting on the collaborative spirit that motorsport demands. This year, she returns in an administrative role, bringing new skills and confidence.
Indian expat Rish, volunteering as a photographer, describes it as an incredible opportunity: “You can meet people from around 180 countries. Volunteering gives you skills, knowledge, and a chance to explore your potential.”
For others, the journey is deeply personal. Mohammed Yazeed bin Dhabban, 18, still remembers attending the GP as a spectator in 2022. “The sound of the cars, the crowds, the joy—everything was incredible,” he recalls. Now, stepping into the role of volunteer, he is eager to give back to the event that once filled him with awe. “I feel proud. It brings me a great sense of honour to represent the country.”
From manning spectator zones to supporting VIP operations, volunteers are woven into every aspect of race weekend. Their dedication reflects the UAE’s commitment to empowering youth, strengthening community ties, and elevating the nation’s global sporting footprint.
As Yas Marina prepares to host the season finale, thousands of fans will witness the high-speed action—but the heart of the event beats in the passion, discipline, and unity of its volunteers. In a place where cultures converge and adrenaline meets ambition, these young men and women embody the UAE’s spirit: welcoming, resilient, and always striving for excellence.
