In alignment with Law No. (5) of 2016, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi issues new resolution restricting groundwater drilling in key areas to ensure long-term sustainability.
Abu Dhabi, UAE — In a significant move aimed at protecting the emirate’s diminishing groundwater reserves, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a new resolution prohibiting the drilling of new groundwater wells in designated areas across Abu Dhabi. The decision, developed in coordination with relevant authorities, underscores the emirate’s commitment to water conservation and sustainable resource management.
This latest initiative is part of the ongoing implementation of Law No. (5) of 2016, which regulates groundwater management in the emirate. The law seeks to ensure responsible usage and long-term preservation of Abu Dhabi’s limited freshwater reserves — a critical concern in one of the most arid regions in the world.
Groundwater in Abu Dhabi plays a vital role in supporting agriculture, forestry, and ecosystem preservation. However, years of over-extraction have placed significant pressure on this finite resource. The newly issued resolution aims to halt further depletion and prevent unregulated access, while encouraging alternative and more sustainable water sources.
A spokesperson from the Environment Agency stated:
“This resolution is a proactive measure to protect one of our most precious natural resources. It reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader goals of preserving biodiversity and ensuring water security for future generations.”
The enforcement of the ban will focus on high-priority zones where groundwater levels have been critically impacted. Existing wells will remain under strict monitoring and regulation to ensure compliance with conservation guidelines.
This development comes as the UAE continues to demonstrate economic strength and resilience, with forecasts projecting a 5.1% growth in 2025, according to government sources. As the country advances its infrastructure and development agenda, parallel efforts to balance growth with environmental responsibility are gaining momentum.
Through this resolution, Abu Dhabi reaffirms its leadership in environmental stewardship, sending a clear message about the importance of sustainable natural resource management in securing the future of the emirate and the wider region.
